Welcome to PEG INDIA
Female infanticide and gender discrimination have been a social stigma in the Indian society for many years now. The trend of decline in the Child Sex Ratio (CSR), defined as number of girls per 1000 of boys between 0-6 years of age, has been unabated since 1961.
As per the figures of 2011 census, there are just 918 girls in India for 1000 boys. The decline in the Child Sex Ratio (CSR) is a major indicator of gender discrimination which reflects both, pre-birth discrimination manifested through gender biased sex selection, and post birth discrimination against girls. Girls of today are future of tomorrow and hence it is extremely important to empower them. In order to achieve true women empowerment, we have to begin with the girl children: by saving, protecting and educating them. The mindset that a girl is a liability needs to be changed and this requires eliminating it at the grass root level. The role of education is extremely important here and goes a long way in empowering women. A society, in which girls are educated means a society with less child marriages, decreased levels of poverty, safer women and heightened participation of women in socio-economic processes. PEG is an initiative by Hiya Jain to promote women empowerment, make people more aware about the various injustices against women in our country and also create a platform for urban audience to contribute to this cause in their own ways.
